En 1974, Norio Suzuki se rend sur l’île de Lubang aux Philippines à la recherche du soldat japonais restant Hiro Onoda déclaré légalement mort depuis 1959. Il retrouve Onoda vêtu de son uniforme en lambeau, toujours en guerre, attendant le retour de l’armée japonaise. Onoda refusa obstinément d'accepter l'idée que la guerre était finie et Norio Suzuki fut obligé de revenir sur l’île accompagné de l’ancien commandant d’Onoda, le major Taniguchi pour obtenir sa reddition.
